Groundwater in US and other developed countries is seriously contaminated with highly toxic halogenated chemicals,
named DNAPLs (Dense NonAqueous Phase Liquids), leached from industrial facilities.
In an interdisciplinary research at Carnegie Mellon University, I synthesized polymer chains from the surface of iron nanoparticles using Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP). The smart nanomaterials selectively react to the pollutants to degrade and neutralize them. Experiments have proved that the pollution level have been lowered significantly by the treatment. R 1 2 3
